WOODPECKER Damage & Remedy

WOODPECKER Damage & Remedy

Woodpeckers peck at buildings for one of three reasons: 1) Attracting a mate or claim a territory  2) Seek out food, insects  3) Or create a nest cavity.  Buildings with cedar siding or painted siding with earth tones, have the most problems.  If you have cedar siding , its a good idea to seal up all the vertical grooves to prevent insect intrusions.

If they are after food, give them a snack of suet blend cakes.  There is a difference in the quality of suet.  Always buy the premium  suet (NO CORN OR MILO).  Come check our many different styles of suet feeders.  Woodpeckers prefer dead trees for drumming.  If woodpeckers are excavating a nesting hole in your house siding, put up a nesting box in a near by tree.  Wild Bird Connection sells Nesting Boxes made for woodpeckers.

Scare the Woodpeckers.  Sneak up on the birds with a garden hose.  Mylar ribbons, these reflect light and blow in the wind.  Wild Bird Connection sells Scare Tape.  Don't waste your money on Owl decoys, rubber snakes or balloons, usually not very effective.
