House Wrens Return?

House Wrens Return?

When will House Wrens return?

We wait eagerly for the return of many bright and colorful birds, such as Orioles and Hummingbirds.  But, what about House Wrens?  Do Wrens migrate?  Yes, that go far enough south were there are still plenty of bugs to eat.  They start showing up in April to start building nests for their young.

This noisy Wren of summer loves our birdhouses, but visits bird feeders only irregularly.  House Wrens are a mixed blessing in a yard, as they can be aggressive to other cavity-nesting birds.  But, they are fun to watch and add charm of their great song to the sounds of summer.

he Male House Wren comes back first and starts looking for bird houses or nest cavities.  He will collect sticks and fill 2 or 3 different houses.  When the Female Wren arrives, she will pick out the house for their family.  Wrens will have 2 broods per year, and sometimes change houses for the second brood.  Stop at Wild Bird Connection and check out our different Wren Houses.

WHAT DO WRENS EAT IN THE SUMMER?
Your best way to attract a Wren (besides putting out a wren house) would be to have a backyards full of insects.  Wild Bird Connection sells Meal Worms that can be placed close to your Wren house.  We also have Meal Worm Feeders. It is also a good idea to grow a variety of native plants to attract beneficial bugs.

MOVING WATER
House Wrens are attracted to moving water.  We sell Water Wigglers that move the water in your bird bath 24 hours a day.  Not only will the rippling waves attract birds, but mosquitos will not lay eggs in moving water.
