Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds love Nectar and Flying Insects

Hummingbirds are the tiniest birds in the world.
Hummingbirds need to eat on average 7 times per hour for about 30-60 seconds.
Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly forwards and backwards.
Hummingbirds have an average life span of about 5 years.

Migratory Restlessness
As spring or fall approaches, small migratory birds tend to become restless and get more active after sunset.
Flight by day or by night
Smaller birds such as Hummingbirds migrate almost exclusively at night.  Flying at night allows the birds to rest and feed during the day.  The atmosphere at night is much more favorable for night flight.  Also, there are fewer predators at night.

Navigation Maps
Birds have some kind of internal navigation map.  Birds are sensitive to the pull of the earth's magnetic poles.  Also, many studies show birds migrate via their genetic coding or by learning the route from their parents.  It is amassing  how precise they are year after year.

  • Color is important in attracting hummingbirds because this is what attracts them, not the scent, which attracts insect pollinators. Hummingbirds are attracted to brightly colored flowers, including yellow, orange, pink and purple, but they are attracted to red more than any other color, as red seems to be an indicator of food to these small birds.
